071 Band
About the band
071 Band was never a real band. It was three kids from Sarajevo who dreamed of having one.
A country that no longer exists
We were born in Sarajevo in the mid-seventies, in a kingdom far, far away. Well, actually, in a country that doesn’t exist anymore. Growing up during the last decade of socialist Yugoslavia was what we would call a happy childhood today. Considering what followed in the Balkans in the nineties, it was a rather pleasant and liberal environment, filled with sports, rock music and friendship, without nationalism or ethnic and religious hatred.
This is our own perspective and personal experience of that time, not an attempt at any objective historical judgement of the era.
The living-room concert
Like plenty of kids, we dreamed of having our own band. Unlike most of them, we actually played a concert: in our parents’ living room, on toy guitars and wearing wigs, in front of an audience made up entirely of our families.
Luckily, there is no recording of that tragic event, and the memory of it is, just as luckily, fading. What we do remember is that we opened with “Suada” by Plavi Orkestar. The rest is history.
Songs that waited
Over the years, the verses kept coming and piling up in a drawer, never dreaming they would one day turn into real songs. Then AI came along, and with it the chance to finally bring those songs to life. That is how, a few decades after the living-room concert, 071 Band actually got started.
Why we do it
Today, Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a small heart-shaped country in the middle of Europe’s continent that is still trying to heal its wounds caused by a genocidal, bloodthirsty aggression on its territory, multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, and genuinely friendly and funny people.
Those three kids from Sarajevo are now separated by oceans, and, sadly, by distances no map can measure. But thanks to AI, they still get to “make” music together, to remember the city and the world they grew up in, and for the sheer joy of it.
